Why I Almost Didn’t Start My Business

The initial pause button was Covid....I was about to pull the trigger when Covid hit, but thought to myself, how can I possibly start a business helping companies hire people when everywhere I look, people are being laid off?

I told myself I'd wait until things were back to "normal" and then I'd do it.

6 months...8 months....passed. True "normal" never returned....

By this point, I'd lost some of my gusto. I mean, it was a scary new world out there, full of horror stories. Everywhere I looked - LinkedIn, Facebook, you name it - people were being let go. 😬

I decided that it was now or never: I would take the plunge January 2021.

But as that date drew near, I grew more and more nervous...

  • It was November 2020.

  • My LLC was created.

  • Operating agreement in place.

  • Insurances policies purchased.

  • Contracts drawn up by my lawyer.

  • Website underway.

  • I was ready to roll.

    I almost chickened out. ALMOST...

Ironically, it was my Steady Eddy, fellow insurance nerd, generally risk-adverse husband who snapped me out of it. (The same guy who thought I was nuts when I hatched this grand scheme several cocktails deep in Vegas two years earlier.)

    "But what if I fail??"

"I don't know anyone who regretted failing, only those who never tried."

"But what will people think if I fail? I said.

"That's never stopped you before. Besides, 95% of people wouldn't have the guts to even consider doing this. If anything, they'll think more highly of you for even attempting it."

Today as I scrolled LinkedIn, I can't help but notice it almost seems there are just as many layoff posts as there were 3 years ago.

I have a thriving business anyway.

Thank goodness for people who believe in you and will shove you off the high dive when you've climbed to the top but are too afraid to jump.

And don't forget - If you're good at something and offer great value, timing and market saturation really don't matter as much as you might think.

Don't let the noise distract you. Surround yourself with awesome people who have your back, and then put your head down and GRIND.
