Underwriting is a Sales job.

Underwriting is a sales job.

People do business with people they know, like and trust.

Producers have lots of choices when marketing a new account - they are going to gravitate to those they like working with.

Those who have the same sense of urgency and excitement about their new opportunity.

Those who want to win.

Who get the job done.

I wish more carriers understood how critical personality is. So much more so than number of years on a resume.

You can train underwriting skill.

You can't train someone to give a crap. To be funny, likeable.

To have that sense of urgency and drive to return calls and emails.

Let's be honest - Carriers all offer generally the same products and prices. Sure, there are some outliers for certain classes of business but for the most part, a good underwriter can get it done if they really want to.

If you're an underwriter, and you're great at your job, congrats - you're probably a great sales person, whether you know it or not.

You're selling YOU!

(This is why many of us who are great underwriters find ourselves later becoming successful producers.) 😉
